Measuring Malaysian lower secondary learners' reading ability on a CEFR-aligned text

To capture learners’ interest in reading and help them understand the content of their reading, it is important to write at a level that aligns with abilities. This will motivate learners read comprehend material. A CEFR-aligned textbook valuable tool for improving English language skills lower secondary Language classrooms. Therefore, significant assess competence text comprehension using from textbook. These assessments were conducted based on narrative two different techniques: miscue analysis retelling. The sample comprised 20 ‘C’ grade randomly selected Malaysian schools. data miscues analysed quantitatively, following Goodman, Watson, Burke’s In-Depth Procedure (2005). quality retelling was evaluated criteria set by Irwin Mitchell’s (1983) 5-point scoring method. findings revealed all achieved target descriptor scale B1, indicating they can simple texts topics relevant field interests sufficient comprehension. study implies are appropriate understand. Furthermore, effectively monitor levels enhance among low intermediate-level learners. Based habits require assistance, teachers plan upcoming lessons.
